I. INTRODUCTION
The Institute of Economics at the University of Copenhagen (with financial support from the
Danish Research Academy) is organising a two-week intensive Ph.D. course on Social Capital
and Development from 18 to 29 June 2001. Social capital theory is an exciting new topic that
broadens our thinking on development and offers many fresh policy insights. At the end of the
course we are also hosting the 3rd Nordic Workshop in Development Economics. All Nordic Ph.D.
students fully or partly within development economics are invited to present papers at the
workshop (drafts also welcome). Participation in the course is not a requirement for
participation in the workshop. Both events are targeted towards economics Ph.D. students from
the Nordic countries that have an interest in development economics. Further information on
the course, which is open to 25 participants from Denmark and other Nordic countries, is given
below. A few additional participants with separate funding may also be admitted.

VI. 3rd NORDIC Ph.D. WORKSHOP IN DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS
Following up on the first two nordic Ph.D. workshops in development economics, which were held
in Gothenburg hosted by Professor Arne Bigsten, we are pleased to invite for the third workshop in Development Economics on June
28-29. All Nordic Ph.D. students fully or partly within development economics are invited to
present a paper at this workshop. Papers are not confined to any particular topic, but can lie
within any area of development economics (broadly interpreted). Participation in the course is
not a requirement for participation in the workshop.
The format of the workshop is that of a standard presentation of each paper by its author
followed by constructive discussion. Since this is a Ph.D. workshop, draft papers are also
welcome, and presented papers are not required to have journal quality.
VII. REGISTRATON AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PARTICIPANTS
Those wishing to participate should contact Vibeke Kovsted for an application form
as soon as possible. The application should be sent together with a curriculum vitae and a
description of research interests to Vibeke Kovsted
not later than 1 April 2001. A final list of participants will be issued in May. Those wishing
to present a paper at the Workshop should submit title and a brief abstract with their
application. Papers are due on June 1, preferably in electronic (.pdf) format.
Assistance with booking accommodation etc. will be available, and there are 10 grants for
students from outside Denmark under which travel expenses of up to DKK 1000 can be refunded.
Free accommodation in modest facilities and a per diem can also be provided after approval by
the course organiser. For Danish participants from outside Copenhagen there are up to five
grants, under which travel expenses of no more than DKK 500 per person can be refunded together
with accommodation and a per diem.
Those wishing to participate in the course must therefore indicate in their application whether
they apply as well for one of the above grants or have their own funding. Please direct all
queries related to funding, accommodation, transport etc to Ms Vibeke Kovsted.
